Surgery

Today we joined up with Lovelupins in Skipton and ate in a very quirky cafe with the most amazing cakes!!!!!!
Then on to Skipton Castle.  It was really very interesting.  A regiment was in residence!  We were shown how to load a musket and fire; told about the role of each of the men in the regiment and saw how the officers ate at a proper table with pewter utensils while the men ate in the field!  The men who were reenacting all this were really into their roles !

One of the most interesting parts of the visit was the talk the surgeon gave.  No anesthetic in those days.  He did not give the patient alcohol as it would have made them bleed all the more!  He showed us how his different instruments were used.  The most frequent operation being to remove ends of fingers that had been damaged when a musket misfired!

Unfortunately we had to leave before the skirmish!
