Fred & Andy

Our safari group at Komodo National Park

First stop today is the island of Komodo to try and see the dragons. Because of the events of two days ago we missed going to Rinca, which is the other island where you can trek and see dragons. Rinca is much smaller and its easier to see them. We've already been warned that its mating season and they may be illusive.

There are quite a few people here early and we see the guys we did the freediving course with on Gili Air. We choose the medium length trek and off we go with our guide. He speaks pretty good English but Chiara and Lorena can translate anything he can't explain. It appears he is one of only two guides who do overnight camping trips on the island. The island is an amazing landscape and we both wish we could have more time here - an overnight would have been great. As we trek we get close up to a small (less than 1m) dragon sitting in the sun and we see a huge one up a hill in the distance - Nico has a brilliant camera and the extra shot here is one he took of the dragon on the hill - it must have been 50m or more away!  We're a little disappointed we didn't see more but that's the way it goes with wildlife.

Back to the boat and the first dive is at pink beach. Fred, Andy and Chiara snorkel and its pretty amazing. We try to practice a bit of freediving but there are currents and its not deep enough in the little bay area. Fred's slightly nervous of going out further into the currents.

Back on the boat and there are two more dives en route back to base. The water is really choppy in places today and there is no chance of any more snorkelling. At one point, Lorena is in two minds about going down for one of the dives because the surface water is going in all directions but its protected below as its an underwater mountain so they dive and Andy says its fantastic.

We get back to base just before dark and say our goodbyes. We're tired so check back into our guest house, go for pizza then bed.

We're due to fly to Bali and Singapore tomorrow. While we were on the boat we got news that Bali Airport was closed due to a volcanic eruption on Java so all flights from Flores were cancelled. Its seems its reopened now but we'll have to wait until the morning to find out if that's still the case - lets hope all goes to plan.
