What moves you?

Everyone has something that never fails to move them. To shake your soul to the core, give you goosebumps, make your hair stand on end, a lump in your throat, a tear in your eye...

For me, the sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine and sight of the beautiful piece of engineering design that is the Supermarine Spitfire never fails to move me.

It is so sad that RJ Mitchell did not live long enough to see his Spitfire fly.

This great photograph of the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar Spirit of Kent Mk V Spitfire was taken by aviation photography enthusiast Paul R Bilson at the Damyns Hall air show yesterday. I love the way he's captured the light on the distinctive wings. It is almost poetic. Much as Pete Kynsey's graceful airmanship demonstrated when flying her.

My next Spitfire fix will be this weekend at the Combined Ops Air Show at Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent. Until then I'll have to rely on listening to classical music for the goosebumps and poignant moments.
