A Twelve Striper

This is the caterpillar of the Alder Moth. Although the moth is found throughout Britain the books say it is not common. It was therefore good to see it at RSPB Leighton Moss.

The reserve had a special moth event this morning at which large numbers of people came to see the moths trapped overnight on the Reserve and many brought moths which they had caught elsewhere.

The caterpillar feeds on the leaves of Alder, Birch and Goat Willow. It is shown here with Alder leaves and fruit.
