British Engineering

Today we set out for Northwich, The River Weaver and the The Trent Mersey Canal .Our destination being the Anderton Boat Lift .
A wonderful piece of engineering with a history that illustrates how together, people can do great things .This astonishing work would have been left to rot by central Government were it not for people power. Today it stands proud ,working and a testimony to that which made Britain so great. Engineering.

First though we crossed the first swinging pontoon bridge .pics A and A2
The mural  you see is to the those who had the vision and carried out the work to create the Anderton Lift which lifted boats 50 feet from the River Weaver to the Trent Mersey Canal and also  carried them down .There is a photographic explanation of this in my extras .
Anderton Boat Lift area  has much to offer .Indeed ,travelling the canals of Britain , examples of first class engineering are everywhere .The irony of all this is that the canal system which traverses the country made fortunes in cotton , wool , salt and coal .This certainly enriched central government but little was ever ploughed back to the counties .
