Honouring ourheroes.

A noticeable thing about touring in France is that a large number are named after French public figures. Every small town has its Boulevard Charles de Gaulle or its Place de George Pompidou or even its Rue de Voltaire.

We English rarely do this. Is there a Clem Attlee Avenue or even an Isaac Newton Street.

So it was a pleasure for Knottman out in search of suburban footpaths to come across the Fred Perry way.

Fred Perry was born in Stockport in 1909 and died in Melbourne, Australia in 1995. Many people know that he was the last British tennis player to win Wimbledon before Andy Murray. He won the Mens' Title three times in 1934, 35 and 36.

In all he won 10 Majors Singles and six Major Doubles. Not as many people may know that he was also the World Table Tennis Champion in 1929.

It is nice to see Stockport honouring one of its famous sons even if he only gets a footpath which incidentally Knottman enjoyed walking.

Thanks to all my followers for their kind comments on my suburban blips. My son's spine surgery has been a success. However, as he cannot drive for some weeks more Stockport blips are very likely.
