You might think I would be fed up of archaeological digs.
Not this one, though.
I think the Ness of Brodgar site must be the most important prehistoric site in Europe. It is mindblowing!
When they abandoned the building in the foreground (the last activity found on site, so far, about two and a half millennia BCE) they slaughtered upwards of 400 cattle and piled the leg bones in the courtyard in front of it. Then they laid four whole deer carcasses on top of the pile. Then, apparently, walked away.
Interesting to see the use of coloured paint on some of the buildings and pottery as well.
They are only just starting to scratch the surface in one small corner of the ritual area. It is astonishing.
