Hobbs's Run

Watch the Shadows

Some of you will know the walkway which leads from Echo Point at Katoomba to the Three Sisters and the Giant Stairway, leading visitors into the Jamison Valley. The trail underwent an upgrade for many months but has now re-opened. Let me tell you that the improvements are impressive.  Everything is generally easier and safer but the bush doesn't seem to have been compromised. The overall experience for hikers is excellent. One small feature of the experience is the appearance of metal (but quite realistic) representations of common local fauna (see above).

Taking bushwalks over these many years I have learned to keep an automatic eye out for medium sized fallen branches, the immediate far side of logs, gatherings of leaves, clumps of native grass and random shadows. Never try to walk too fast, don't make too much noise and be mindful of your footfall. You might be lucky enough to come across some wildlife such as a snake not unlike this one. It is true that 6 of the world's top 10 most dangerous snakes are Australian but they are not normally aggressive unless surprised, cornered or provoked. On the other hand they can be quite beautiful and fascinating to watch. Mind your step, though.
