The Critical Thumb

To Paisley Museum which is currently hosting an exhibition of work by George Wyllie called The Why?sman.. (It ends on Sunday 13th September)
Louise Wyllie and I were doing an informal lunchtime talk on The Making of George Wyllie. That's the name of the book we have written about her artist dad. Coming to a bookshop or Kindle near you soon. We hope...
After the talk, we led the audience up to the exhibition and blethered about the work on show.
I caught Louise and George Wyllie Foundation curator, Lynne Mackenzie off-guard as they tried to fix the 'critic's thumb' on George's Machine for Applauding Paintings. It was pointing down - always a worry.
Back in 2012 at the time of the big George Wyllie Retrospective in Glasgow, I played a small part in rescuing said Machine from Scottish Television's cavernous warehouse, where it had been lying unloved and badly in need of some WD40 for years.
It was a surreal experience driving through the streets of Glasgow with the Machine and his floppy hands swaying in the back of my friend's husband's pick-up truck. Luckily it wasn't raining!!
All in day's work with the Wyllies.
