Here we are @DovecotStudios

How did that happen...?

A last-gasp day at the Edinburgh Fringe with the kids as this vast cultural juggernaut prepares to roll out of town.

We went to see a fantastic magician-scientist, called Kevin McMahon at The Gilded Ballon and that ticked all the boxes with the hard-to-please teen and pre-teen.

Afterwards, we wandered towards the Royal Mile and I realised we were walking past Dovecot Studios.

It's a standing joke in our family that I'm always trying to trick them into a gallery...

And here is number one son in a gallery! In Dovecot Studios, to be precise, looking at the work of textile designer Bernat Klein.

His critical analysis of the scene he surveys here was: 'It's a bunch of random carpets.'

But for all that he had a proper look around.

Klein was an influential figure in the world of haute couture in the 1960s and 1970s. All his work was created at his cool postmodern abode and studio in the Scottish Borders.

Next door is an amazing exhibition by a Korean artist called Kwang Young Chun, called Aggregations

We were all totally immersed and entranced by this work which is part sculpture, part painting.

Chun unites the traditions of making and Eastern philosophy with an abiding interest in American Abstract Expressionism.

His work literally pulls you in to he point which you feel wrapped up in his creations.

Both the sculptures and the 'paintings' are made from tiny little three dimensional forms Chun constructs colourful and complex assemblages comprised of triangular forms cut from polystyrene, wrapped in Korean mulberry paper and tied with hand-twisted paper string.

Both exhibitions are on until 26th September.
