What a lovely day:-

to Visit Winkie Light

This iconic little lighthouse is up for sale.  It is situate right at the northern tip of the Island at the Point of Ayre.

This view is taken in an easterly direction towards the Cumbrian coast.  Incidentally the view was so clear today it almost felt like one could have stepped across!

It is being sold (I think) by the Northern Lighthouse Commissioners and this will be the first time it will ever have been in private hands.  The sale has attracted quite a lot of local interest.

One had to queue to get inside.  It has three stories connected by a vertical ladder.  It looks like it would be a candidate for one of George Clarke's "Amazing Spaces"

Anyway I am supporting its purchase by the community through the charity  "Beach Buddies" who would like to use it as a base for their beach cleaning operations in the north of the Isle of Man.

It was originally constructed in the 1880's as a back up for the main Point of Ayre lighthouse.  In its life it has been moved once in order to accommodate the expanding coastline at this point.
