Farewell

This was the final sight of the Avro Vulcan XH558 as she limped home to Robin Hood airport after a fantastic show at the Scottish Air Show.

After a beautiful display run on Saturday at Log Green Ayr she spent a while circling the airport at Prestwick for a long time.  We then heard that an air traffic issue had closed the runway temporarily.  Nothing out or in.

Today we learned the reason for the closure.  The Vulcan had failed to deploy her nose landing gear correctly and although it was eventually found to be in the fully down position, by the Spitfire that was circling with her, the flight crew did not get an indication that the nose gear was locked.

The decision was taken today that she would fly home to Robin Hood at reduced speed with the landing gear left down to ensure she could land before being taken to her hanger for a full inspection and repair of the nose gear.

A sad story for her final visit to Scotland but everyone was happy that she landed ok.
