Love it - but what IS it?

On a short walk this evening (6 September) I passed this tree, which is bearing some kind of fruit/berry/nut. Can anyone out there in this big, wide world Identify it, please?  As an oportunity blip I'm quite pleased with it. Most OBs (of mine) tend to be real emergency blips.
