Quod oculus meus videt

Morning Glory (in the Evening)

A grand tour was promised and as I wearily climbed the stairs back at the hotel at almost 10 pm, a grand tour we had.  Taking in the sites of Old Faithful, Yellowstone Falls, Yellowstone Lake and the various other scenes was a tour de force of eye candy for the landscape photographer.

One thing I was not expecting was the effect of altitude.  Most of the day was above 8,000 ft and even mild effort was met with breathlessness.  Dehydration was another factor and plenty of liquid was needed throughout the day.  The scenes before us were incredible.  While I had read that the area was geothermal active, it seemed that every corner brought forth more evidence with sulphurous steam issuing everywhere.  The advice for the whole of the park is to keep to made paths; quite sobering because for a walker, this area appeared like manna from heaven.

Tomorrow we leave the park and head to the Grand Tetons, before arriving in Jackson.

A some other images of the day are on Flickr.
