Tree Stumps - Mammoth Springs

Day 1 - An early start, not intentional but the 7 hour time difference meant I was wide awake at 3:20 am!  Sorted a few things out and re-packed the suitcase to make it easier to get things as we will spend a majority of one night at most locations on our trip.

We headed out after breakfast for Yellowstone.  Two hours and one mishap in navigation later and we pulled through Gardiner and up to the main gate. I wasn't sure if anyone else was surprised at the unmade sections of road before the main gate!  We headed into Mammoth Springs and spent the rest of the day (after a picnic lunch) in the sulphur fields.

The scale of the place is incredible and I struggled to find a shot that might explain the vistas.  I therefore chose a close up. You can't venture off the built paths for fear of dropping through the soft crust formed by the thermal activity and into the scalding sulphur waters below.

I have added a flickr album of other images from the day to give a flavour of the sites.  Tomorrow we go for a 'grand tour' of the park.
