A Collector of Oddities

Riding of the marches

The Edinburgh Riding has been reinstated in recent years after not being done regularly since 1718.

Nearly 300 very excited horses plus very excited riders have inspected the common grounds of Edinburgh and then rushed excitedly up the Royal Mile. A thrilling spectacle. My husband had been invited to carry one of the Edinburgh Trades banners and I got to stand in a special section to watch the ceremony. It was still rather crowded though as you can see from the photo!

The horses were then packed up into horse boxes on King's Stables Road and the riders and anyone else who wanted (including us of course) repaired to an hostelry for refreshment.

Brilliant fun!
