A Collector of Oddities

St Michael and All Angels

A day out in Houghton-le-Spring for us and a visit to the church of St Michael and All Angels.

We must have spent a good hour or so in there, thanks to the efforts of a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic fellow who took us round it. A recent overhaul to the church uncovered some Roman remains, and under that what looked like a stone circle. So it appears that people have been worshiping at this site for not just hundreds, but thousands of years.

The faded red cross in this window, above and to the left of the icon is a mark made when the church was consecrated over 900 years ago.
