The Circus Comes to Westcliff

Our familiar footpath along the cliffs runs past this cove, where whales have been feeding for the past few days. Trust me that the pointy lump in the middle of the water is a whale breaching. We watched them for a good hour this afternoon, along with a couple hundred other people: on foot, on bikes, in wheelchairs, cars, trucks, motorboats, paddleboards and kayaks. Kids and old folks, guys on their way home from work, entire families lining the path. Beach chairs and coolers and a few cold beers. Lots of people in the water with Go-Pros on sticks. The entire crowd cheers when a whale breaches! The only virtue to this photo is it shows how close the animals are to the shore. The real thrill is seeing one surface after watching the v-shaped foam speeding along in the water.
