The Royal Tweed Bridge

Today, on yet another glorious day weather wise, we visited Berwick  upon Tweed, where three bridges famously span the mouth of the great River Tweed – a beautiful narrow ancient bridge carrying single lane traffic, a railway viaduct, and the road bridge shown in the photograph.  The ‘Old Bridge’ is a 15 span sandstone bridge, built in 1610-24 and was once part of the main route from London to Edinburgh.   The ‘Royal Border Bridge’ is a 28 arched railway viaduct, built in 1847-60 and designed by Robert Stephenson, and finally, the bridge shown in the picture, is the ‘Royal Tweed Bridge’, built in 1925 to carry the A1 across the Tweed, although the A1 now bypasses the town.
