A Roman lighthouse & 300-year-old French graffiti

Just backblipped another picture from our family weekend in Somerset. And now, with the family back at work, we're sitting in our Premier Inn room near Dover, having visited the castle this morning. Luckily, we stayed ahead of the rain that is now pouring down, so were able to have a comfortable look round.

Here's a view from the tower of Dover Castle of the Roman Pharos (lighthouse), to the right of St Mary in Castro church. The inner walls of castle itself are riddled with ornate 18th century graffiti. These were carved with nails by French prisoners of war early in the 18th century, during Malborough's campaigns. I know nothing about these wars, except that they involved the incarceration of around 1500 prisoners at that time. And the captured noblemen were clearly bored - and artistic! (See Extras!)

Tomorrow, bright and early, we head across The Channel on the trail of the ancient Romans in Germania.
