Bad Kreuzheim birdies

After a near 8-hour drive from crossing the ferry to Calais, we've arrived on the outskirts of Mainz in our bijou (very tiny, very basic, but clean) Ibis hotel room. Internet connection is very basic, too. Fingers crossed. Our last comfort-break en route was at Bad Kreuzheim where dozens of these little birds were gathered. Their backs were almost chequered, two shades of brown, their beaks stumpy and finchlike, and their feet pinkish. I don't have my bird book with me. Anyone recognise them?

Tomorrow, we're heading for Mainz city to see the replica of a Roman boat, amongst other things. Should be fun. We'll feel more up to it after a good night's sleep. And the bed seems comfortable ... zzzzzzz!
