Morning paddle on Lyttelton Harbour

The conditions look okay here but we struck a nasty little SW wind on the return from Maori Gardens to Cass Bay - in Lyttelton Harbour. Wind against the tide meant mean standing waves with a tricky sideways twist on the top! Plus, I kept on getting water on the camera lens - grrrrrr! I've tried to remove spots in the one in Extra - put it there to show how far we were from the Heads. It's an interesting harbour to paddle in - Wikipedia says - 

"Approximately 15 km in length from its mouth to Teddington, the harbour sits in the erosion caldera of the ancient Lyttelton Volcano, the steep sides of which form the Port Hills on its northern shore." 
Banks Peninsula itself forms the southern and eastern sides.


So, we were actually paddling inside a caldera! There are some blackbacked gulls sitting on the rocks on the right, one couple of many that are setting up their nesting sites. There'll be babies before too long.
