Pie Town

Today we drove nearly 400 miles from Pinetop, Arizona to Alamogordo, New Mexico. For lunch we stopped at Pie Town, NM for an apple pie and coffee.

Pie Town is a couple of miles from the Continental Divide which in this area has an elevation of about 7800 ft above sea level. If everybody is there, the population is "maybe 60 people".

There was very little traffic on US 60 and we could cruise along at 75 mph for miles on end. The sweeping views of the terrain were awesome. We could see maybe 60 miles in every direction to mountains in the distance. We would see an occasional house about every 10 miles and many old ranch houses that were vacant. There were some cattle but not many.

We passed the Very Large Array Radio Telescope, and we passed the White Sands Missle Range where the first Atomic Bomb was tested, also the Valley of Fire.

Valley of Fire is a basaltic lava flow about 45 miles long and 5 miles wide. It made us think of Hawaii.

After dinner in Alamogordo, we inspected the outdoor exhibits of the Space History Museum.
