White Sands

Like snow, the sand drifts across the road at this National Monument in New Mexico. Skies are clear with clouds only over the distant Sacramento Mountain Range.

This extremely fine sand is gypsum which is rarely found in the world because it is water soluble. It blows like snow. Maintenance crews uses road graders in this 100 degree weather to plow away the drifts.

After staying in Alamogordo last night we visited the New Mexico Space History Museum before heading back home to Tucson. We made a brief side trip into White Sands along the way.

I like the way this image composed itself instead of showing a Mercury Space Capsule or a model of Sputnik.
