History Day

We stayed in Desenzano today which was ideal as I could have a beer with my lunch of tomato salad and onion. We also had a day of culture. First we visited the castello, built in the mediaeval time to defend the city. Not much remains, the walls, some of the rooms and the tower. We scaled the tower which gives nice views of the town.

We then visited the Roman villa which must have been pretty impressive in its day. Some of the villa is under apartment blocks of the modern town, but even the open area is quite extensive and not fully excavated. The area where guests and clients  would have been received must have been very imposing. There are a large number of mosaics in good condition which have been exposed.

Later we went to the harbour where we watched some people receiving boat driving lessons. These seemed to mainly comprise going between near where I took the photograph and the black and white boat further away. This was repeated several times and became mildly boring to watch, and possibly also for the instructor and pupil.
