Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The Peterhead Ship Canal

This afternoon Mrs T and our daughter took themselves off to enjoy an afternoon tea. Abandoned, I headed to Peterhead harbour, always a source of something interesting.

Originally, there were two harbours, north and south, which operated separately until 1826, when Robert Stevenson suggested connecting the two. His son David drew up the plans for what was to become the shortest canal in the UK!

This is the view across the south harbour, through the canal into the north harbour. Access to the other side of the harbour was provided by a rolling lift bridge, known locally as the Queenie Bridge.
