Old postcards advertise South Norwood as "the healthy suburb " of London on account of its fresh air, presumably because of its position on the slopes of a hill. This evening, as the sun headed for the horizon after another lovely afternoon, it was possible to forget the huge city that this country bumpkin finds so terrifying and imagine oneself as one of the pioneers of suburban living.

I had to observe, by the way, that a misty morning in Croydon is much chillier for an early football match than Dunoon - though I tend not to watch football there...
