This access point - what we would have called a 'manhole' when we were young! - was installed by the Council about 10 years ago, as part of an arrangement for draining flood water from the road outside our house into the river, via a pipe across the field opposite.

This particular scheme worked, more or less - but there are still other points along our road where similar works are still definitely needed!
