Its more difficult to photograph a bird landing than taking off as you have to anticipate its movement.

close encounter:
This kingfisher had been on the branch - flown off and grabbed the crab then came back to its roost to 'whack whack' the crab into a nice mushy meal. I anticipated its return to the same branch and set the 60D on motor drive with the focus on the branch and hoped it would be in the same focal plane as the branch - I sort of got it right on this occassion.
