Devil's Bit Scabious

(Succisa pratensis). This attractive wild flower is still going strong well into October.
It is very popular with bees, moths and butterflies.
It was thought to be a cure for Scabies. Legend has it that the Devil grew angry about these medicinal properties and tried to get rid of the plants by biting off the roots. It certainly has short stubby roots.
