Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Alas dear vole.

Owls are unable to digest the fur and bone of their prey, which they usually swallow whole. The indigestible parts are regurgitated through the beak in the form of a compact pellet of bones and fur.
I found this rather weathered pellet earlier this morning on the golf course. From the colour of the fur and the size of the tail skeleton I reckon that the owl had dined on bank voles Myodes glareolus; formerly Clethrionomys glareolus.
