Hermaphrodite angels

The weather was beautiful, warm and sunny, and we went to visit Muchelney Abbey, in the village south of Langport that became famous by being cut off by the flood waters during the winter before last.
The abbey was once only second to Glastonbury in size and importance, but Henry VIII's men "dissolved" it, leaving only the abbot's house and adjacent buildings. The abbey had had an enormous church, with a smaller one beside it for the people of the village. The smaller one was left as the parish church, and these angels appear on its beautiful painted ceiling.
