The Edge of the Wold

On the beech

This is one of Gus's favourite places, on the huge root plate of the beech tree on the bridleway leading down to Silverdale Road and Arnside Tower Farm.  This is where he has trained me to give him a succession of treats as he works his way along the root plate above the path.  Today, though, I was trying to take a photo of him amongst the fallen leaves, and bored, he went into flat collie mode while he waited for the photoshoot to end.

Autumn is progressing well everywhere else on the Knott, but the big beech is still largely green, and rather than colouring en masse, individual leaves are senescing and falling.

A grey day, and now it is dark at 5 pm.  It will be home from work in the dark and no evening walk on the estuary, I shall miss that until next year. It was a good afternoon for staying in and watching the rugby, the stage is set for a massive clash next weekend - somehow that was the final pairing that I always expected (despite hopes to the contrary).
