Evening sky from the bottom of our yard.

This morning was my "For the love of music" class down at University of Cincinnati. I really enjoy this class. There are two leaders - Richard Waller is former principal clarinettist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, so he has his own valuable perspective. The other leader is Charles Parsons, who is a music critic, and a fount of knowledge on all things classical, especially opera. This morning we were listening to some of the music that the Symphony is playing this weekend, a Hindemith piece, Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber,
Prokofiev violin concerto and Stravinsky Petroushka. He usually brings several different recordings of the same piece - and its fascinating listening to the different interpretations and speed that different conductors use. He asked the class what we thought of when we thought of Hindemith - people were generally pretty negative -"dissonant", "modern" some people said. But having listened to the piece, we were all pleasantly surprised and impressed by the piece. It's so great having this preview - you enjoy the music at the concert so much more.
