European Goldfinch

We continued our tour in the Peak District, England's first national part. The weather turned cloudy, then increasingly intermittently rainy and misty.

Featured birds were lapwings (one with chicks), a snipe, several curlews, common sandpipers, many whinchats (as previously), and various other passerines--including this single Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis)--a very distinctive bird that appears with the young Jesus in many European old master paintings. We had it at the end of the afternoon opposite our hotel.
