Cabin canyon

Drove back up Californian Highway 1. Mostly just cruised through enjoying the drive and the view. Stopped briefly at Sand Dollar beach, but continued through to get to the off-grid community I'd been told about.

Turns out the Palo Colorado Association is a steep, wooded canyon lined with all sorts of cabins, many built on stilts. Dampness and rot aren't their biggest problem - 7 years of drought is. They aren't off-the-grid either, but the variety of constructions was exciting enough.

At the top of the canyon there's the Mid-Coast Fire Station. Today they were getting ready for a big Halloween party. From there the road winds and climbs over many ridges into the state park. I eventually turned around and headed back to the highway.

I stopped for sun & swim at Marina beach before returning the rental car at the airport. I passed the time catching up on some BBC radio comedy before getting onto another (over)full flight. They were offering $1000 + 2 days food & accommodation for anyone wanting to return on Tuesday.
