Capturing my Journey

Weaning calves

Today we weaned the calves from their mothers. Do you recognise any of them? Let me refresh your memory. Front left is Bonny, then Heather and Jessie and then Hamish the bullock with horns that has been sold to be a visitor attraction at Kirtlington Golf Course. The other two at the back corners are two bullocks that will stay on the farm until they have fattened enough to go to the freezer (generally 3 years for highland cattle). Its going to be a noisy night although the cows seem slightly relieved to not have their calves on them. The cows got their mineral bolus and an injection for fluke/worms.

When heading out to do the cattle we noticed half a dozen of my naughty gimmers had escaped from with their tup. They are a troublesome lot this lot. Mainly as I am trying to heft them to a new hill and they just don't know it yet. Once we have lambs being born on this hill it will be easier. Anyway Breagh did a super job of rounding them up and putting them back and then husband and I spent a couple of hours repairing yet more fencing.

12c overcast all day.
