Tiny Tuesday - Mason's Mark.

With Sis, BiL and a couple of friends, we treated them to the delights of Roslin Glen and the Chapel.
We started the chapel visit with the official guided tour during which, to the delight of the assembly, was interrupted by a guest appearance by William who took centre stage, licked his paws, and then, when all the oooing and aaahing had died down, strolled off; with the official proceedings completed, Mrs TD took over and put her own professional slant on the details of some of the wonderful carvings.

The blip is an illegal picture of a mason's mark on one of the pillars. On admission to the Mason's Guild, the new member had to register his name and mark and it has been suggested that he would mark each piece of his work to claim it as his and, therefore, justify his subsequent payment. But then again . . . there could be a completely different explanation. This mark is about one and a half inches tall.

During the 1960s, the interior of the chapel was coated with an impermeable cement wash to protect against moisture ingress; unfortunately, it had the effect of sealing moisture into the stone causing a horrendous amount of damage. The material was removed aboout twenty years ago leaving the stonework this dull grey instead of the lovely sandstone colours which can be seen peeking through in the top right hand corner of the picture.
