Graving Dock

Kaybee was right yesterday, there are two types of drydocks. The floating dock as I showed you yesterday, and the graving dock for the much bigger vessels as you can see on this picture. These docks are not floating but have large doors. After the vessel is inside the dock, they close the doors and pump out the water. On the picture you can see the bulbous bow of the Greek flagged container vessel Sealand Illinois (74583 gt, built 2000). On the dock floor you can see her anchors and chains. The Sealand Illinois was involved in a collision with Liquid Petroleum Gas Carrier SCF Tobolsk (23003 gt, built 2006) in the Arabian Gulf. SCF Tobolsk has sustained damage to a ballast tank and in an area above the waterline in the vicinity of the engine-room. The collision occurred some 75 miles north-east of Dubai, as the vessel was entering the Straits of Hormuz. The Sealand Illinois however, sustained mega damage, more than 400 tons of ships steel has to be renewed. Damen Shiprepair Yard in Rotterdam won the contract to repair the vessel in time for her next charter.
