Roadrunner

We went to Sweetwater Wetlands on the outskirts of Tucson today and this Greater Roadrunner appeared near the small parking lot around midday as we were eating lunch. He was not fazed by our presence, and I got quite a number of shots.  Interestingly, roadrunners have been classified as members of the cuckoo family.  Other good birds there included a green heron and a coopers hawk.

Afterwards we drove some 30 miles south to Green Valley, where we'll stay for a couple of nights with our friends Kate and Tom from Maine, who have taken to wintering here. We saw more birds on a later walk with them, highlighted by a Vermilion Flycatcher--a distant spot of brilliant red in the light of the setting sun.
