Lost and Found

This is a new memorial - and quite a tale.

After the end of the Great War memorials went up across Salford in all sorts of places, most of them privately funded.

The one in the Greengate area was removed in 1968 when the slum clearance programme was in full swing. Trinity Way - the Inner Ring Road - now crosses its former location.

The bits of war memorial were held in a Council depot for decades. Then - they vanished.

Last year, the 100th anniversary of the start of the so-called (mis-named) war to end all wars, the great great niece of two of the soldiers commemorated on the former  memorial campaigned to have it back, backed by the Manchester Evening News.

To cut a very long story short (read the inscription) here it is. It is a new memorial, and nicely done. Fred Done of BetFred (born in Ordsall, living in Worsley, and proud of his city) and others deserve credit for it happening. The area around it is changing, a mix of the old and the new. So good to have a bit of history - and an act of remembrance - commemorated.
