Icing Up

Dear Diary,

After our mild weather things have taken a turn to colder temperatures.  At night it is in the 20's F.  The little wetlands near my house has been "stiffening" for a week.  Soon it will ice over completely.

This is a beaver habitat.  You can see the remains of their work along the edges.  Their lodge is out of view from the road.  I suspect that they will be moving to a new location at some point because they have very few small trees left to harvest for winter food.

Watching the landscape change and respond to the new weather conditions is one of the many joys I get from living in New England.  Right now, I am waiting on the rains that are supposed to come this afternoon and last through tomorrow.  We need the rain but it will melt this first ice.  It will return very soon...it will not be denied!  The weather looks fine through Thanksgiving.  Good for those who have to travel but I am itching for the first snowfall!
