stuff & nonsense

All Good Things...

As the sun sets on another film festival, so I decided to shoot the rays of the dying sun hitting the castle walls.

For me, the film festival not only gives us the opportunity for some sneak previews of some amazing independent films that will appear in cinema's over the next 12 months as the films shown gain UK distributors, but almost more importantly, it allows us to see films we are unlikely ever to see again. Having enjoyed immensely the Shinji Somai retrospective I was gutted to discover that none of his 13 films are available on dvd or blu ray. Shame.

Soooo... some facts and figures to go with the end of the fest.

My top recommendations (only the films you're likely to see in the cinemas) in no particular order.

Killer Joe
Brave
Grabbers
California Solo
Day of the Flowers
Dragon
Shadow Dancer

The final count of films was 32, totalling some 3,330 minutes or 55.5 hours. The shortest film was 74 minutes and the longest 207 minutes. The average film length was 104 minutes.

The green festival was also a big hit. Didn't take the car out once and only used the bus for a single journey out and two back to avoid complete drenchings! So, I clocked up approximately 90 miles walking over the period too!

Oh, and the small matter of 12 blips!

Day Eleven

Sailor Suit and Machine Gun The final film in the Shinji Somai retrospective. When a Yakuza boss dies, the only living heir to the crime gang is his schoolgirl grand niece. See this if you liked: Azumi.

Chapiteau Show Russian "epic" combines War and Peace with The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Traffic in a tale of intermixed lives at a Crimean holiday resort. See this if you liked: Any film that lasts as long as War and Peace with the characters of The Rocky Horror Picture show!
