Nuns Valley

One of the most popular tourist trips out of Funchal is to the remote and inaccessible Curral das Freiras ( literally the nuns' stables).

It was a gift to the convent so that the nuns could escape the grasp of 16 century pirates. Deep at the bottom of an eroded valley, it was cut off again in the tragic landslides of 2010.

The viewpoint Eira do Serrado is magnificent and this was my favourite shot in the changing weather today.
