Salvage

On 29 April this year the beautiful mansion Clandon Park caught fire and was reduced to a shell. The National Trust had in place a well rehearsed rescue procedure and quite a few of the treasures inside were saved but even so it was a devastating loss. Luckily there was no loss of life.
Clandon was built in the 1720s and was one of the country's most complete examples of a Palladian mansion.
I passed through the park today on the way to the garden centre, still open for business. It was good to see that things are happening. The National Trust website says that they are now making the building safe so that they can enter and begin the large scale salvage effort which has been designed by salvage experts. They are hopeful that Clandon Park can be rebuilt and has a long term future. It will be many years before we will be able to visit.
