Cairo Taxi

A late evening ride out to Kandahar. This taxi was something of an illuminated feast on the inside including this sign mounted on the dashboard. And the windows worked.

Many of the cars are ramshackle jalopies with no functioning seat belts or windows, seats that don't move back on their runners, taxi metres that refuse to work or are just plain absent and drivers who hide their lit fags out of their windows until you are under way. Others are mobile pleasure palaces with disco music and red, white and blue lights flooding ever door pocket and footwell.

In all cases you better have some small notes and coins ready as the one thing they all have in common is the complete absence of change. I've no idea where the drivers put the fares the previous passengers have paid . . . nor do they!
