Sawdust to Soil

The timber to lumber industry, though much reduced, is still quite large in Oregon.
Not surprisingly, the sawmills produce a huge amount of sawdust as the lumber is created from the trees.
Of course sawdust is a valuable by product of lumber production.
One way it is used is to recycle it in the production of garden soil.
Huge heaps of sawdust are allowed to molder and compost eventually becoming soil.
The composting process causes lots of heat to build up in the piles.

On cold rainy days the steam clouds arising from the sawdust heaps are impressive.
