Lions

Abstract Thursday: The lions are made of stone

Red sun going down, way on over dirty town
Starlings are sweeping around, in crazy shoals
Yes and a girl is there, high heeling across the square
The wind it blows around in her hair, and the flags upon the poles
Waiting in the crowd to cross at the light
She looks around to find a face she can like.

Church bell clinging on, just a trying to get a crowd for Evensong
Nobody cares to depend upon, the chime it plays
They're all in the station, praying for trains
Congregation, late again
It's getting darker all the time these flagpole days
Drunk old soldier he gives her a fright
He's a crazy lion, he's a howling for a fight.

Strap hanging, gunshot sound
Doors slamming, on the overground
The starlings are tough, but the lions are made of stone
Her evening paper is horror torn
But there's hope later, for Capricorns
Her lucky stars give her just enough, to get her home
Then she's reading about a swing to the right
But she's thinking about a stranger in the night
I'm thinking about the lions
What happened to the lions tonight.

Dire Straits - Lions

In December 1978 I saw Mark Knopfler and Dire Strait's gig at the Town Hall in Birmingham. It is hard to believe that was 37 years ago.  Where does the time go?  I had heard the iconic Sultans of Swing on the radio towards the end of that summer and bought the album in the early autumn.  I loved it. Even now, all these years later, whenever I see stone lions, this song pops into my head.

Needless to say, this is not a "straight out of the camera" shot.  I've taken the original image and then added various pixelated and blurred layers in Aperture Photo, cutting away some of the blurred layers to allow the foreground to come through.  Its possibly not really abstract enough to qualify for the challenge, but I liked the original image too much to lose it all!
