Sanctuary Knocker

We had a bit of a slow start today. The weather forecast was for rain all day so we decided to head off to Durham for the afternoon, instead of going for a walk. We had a wander around the cathedral, and then spent the rest of the afternoon in bookshops......

This knocker is found on the entrance to Durham Cathedral.  For those who had committed an offence, they could use this knocker to be given 37 days of sanctuary. This right was abolished in 1624.
