'Christmas Day - Island Style'

Backflip.

The day started with the kids climbing out of their bunks at around 6:30am to check if Santa knew where they were and if he'd visited us in the Penitentiary where we stayed. Yep, sure enough he knew and there were a few wrapped gifts for them to unwrap each, left in front of the fireplace.

We enjoyed the a slow relaxing day with no rushing around anywhere. We walked along the beach, rode our bikes and enjoyed the warm calmness of the day. Such a change to our usual Christmas rush back home. Exploring the history of this extraordinary island bit by bit.

As night fell, Dylan and I went for a walk down at the beach. This view is looking back towards the old cement silos, one of the many failed businesses set up in the late 19th Century by the Italian entrepreneur Diego Bernacchi. These days anyone visiting the island is free to wander around and explore any of the old ruins left behind.
